The season brings acres of pumpkins, corn mazes, hayrides, a petting zoo, and kids' activities, plus cider and treats, and a first-ever Oktoberfest weekend (Oct 2 to 4) adds a beer garden and German-themed games. When the sun goes down, the Pumpkin Glow Trail (Fridays through Sundays, 6:30 to 9 p.m.) lights up thousands of jack-o-lanterns along an evening walking trail. It is one of Northwest Indiana's biggest family fall traditions and an easy day trip from the South Suburbs or the Dunes. Go early in the day to beat the crowds, and bring a wagon for the pumpkins.
