The free Indiana Dunes Outdoor Adventure Festival runs Sept 4 to 20 across Northwest Indiana: 50-plus expert-led hikes, bike rides, paddles, bird walks, and more.
For three weeks beginning Sept 4, the Indiana Dunes Outdoor Adventure Festival turns the whole Northwest Indiana shoreline into one big outdoor classroom. More than 50 expert-led events spread across Porter, Lake, and La Porte counties: guided hikes, bike rides, paddling trips on the Little Calumet River, bird walks, photography programs, orienteering, and yoga. The historic Chellberg Farm anchors the family-friendly Duneland Fall Festival, with food vendors, live music, and demonstrations. The events are free, and most need no registration at all, so families can pick whatever suits the day. Because the festival also opens access to natural areas not usually open to the public, it is a genuinely one-of-a-kind window for exploring the Dunes. Grab trail shoes, head to the Visitor Center on State Road 49, and plan a weekend (or three) around the schedule.
